Shapefiles and FIPS Code Variables for SEER*Stat

The file SS_shapefiles_and_variables.zip [ZIP - 3.1 MB] contains Shapefiles and SEER*Stat user-defined variables for use in sessions whose results will be exported and used with SEER*Stat Bridge. Each variable contains groupings for individual states and counties that are labelled according to their FIPS codes (or HSA Codes). Each variable is designed to be used with a specific SEER*Stat database (SEER limited-use incidence or U.S. Mortality), although some variables can be used in more than one database. When using a variable in a database that is not listed, please check to make sure your results are including all of the cases/deaths that should be in your results.

Using the File

To import the variables in the file into your SEER*Stat session or dictionary, follow these steps.

  1. Click on the link above to download the file to a directory on your PC or local network, then extract the files from the ZIP archive.
  2. Open SEER*Stat and start a frequency, rate, or case listing session.
  3. On the Data tab, select the database that you want to use. Consult the File Contents section below for the recommended databases to use, depending on which variable(s) you are importing. You can use other databases if you prefer, as long as they contain the same base variables for states and/or counties.
  4. Open the dictionary and click Import.
  5. Navigate to the location where you saved the "fmx" file on your hard drive or local network. Click on it, then click Open.
  6. The Import Variable Definitions dialog will display the variables listed in the "fmx" file. Highlight only the variables you want to import, then click OK.
  7. If you encounter problems during the importing process, consult the Import Variables topic and related topics in the SEER*Stat help system.
  8. The new user-defined variable will be displayed in the User-Defined folder on the Dictionary dialog. Click Close to exit the dictionary and return to your session.
    • If you saved your imported variables to the dictionary, you can quit at this point, and return to set up and execute your session later.
  9. Set up the rest of the parameters for your session, depending on your data set of interest. Follow the instructions in the SEER*Stat help system if necessary. Be sure to include one of your newly imported FIPS code variables on the Table tab, so that it is included in the exported results. Execute the session when you are ready.

It is possible to use these variables with your own data, as long as your database contains the same state and county standard variables, with the same underlying values (i.e., they use FIPS codes as the underlying values).

    This variable can be imported into the dictionary for the SEER limited-use database "Mortality - All COD, Public-Use With State, Total U.S. (1969-2004)"; "Mortality - All COD, Public-Use With State, Total U.S. (1990-2004)"; "Mortality - All COD, Public-Use With County, Total U.S. (1969-2004)"; and "Mortality - All COD, Public-Use With County, Total U.S. (1990-2004)".

    This shapefile has been modified from an Esri (ArcMap 9.1) shapefile for use with SEER*Stat Bridge.

    Please note: x/y coordinates for Alaska and Hawaii are not geographically correct in the shapefile. These states have been "moved" so that when the shapefile is used in ArcMap™ they will be easier to view.

  2. State-County FIPS (2000-2004)

    This user-defined variable (State_County_FIPS_2000_2004) includes five-digit state/county FIPS codes for each US county that existed between 2000 and 2004. If a county was split after 2000, then the file contains a variable for the combined counties.

    This variable can be imported into the dictionary for the SEER public-use database "Mortality - All COD, Public-Use With County, Total U.S. (1990-2004)" or "Mortality - All COD, Public-Use With County, Total U.S. (1969-2004)".

    Since the following counties split during the 2000-2004 time period, they are grouped together in this user-defined variable:

    • AK: Denali/Yukon-Koyukuk (02911) (1990-2002) contains AK: Denali Borough (02068) (2003+) and AK: Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area (02290) (2003+)
    • CO: Adams County (08001) - 2002+ contains CO: Adams before Broomfield (08911) - 1969-2001.
    • CO: Boulder County (08013) - 2002+ contains CO: Boulder before Broomfield (08912) - 1969-2001.
    • CO: Jefferson County (08059) - 2002+ contains CO: Jefferson before Broomfield (08913) - 1969-2001.
    • CO: Weld County (08123) - 2002+ contains CO: Weld before Broomfield (08914) - 1969-2001.

    If using data prior to 2000, please be certain that your results contain all of the cases/deaths coded to the proper geographic unit. Not all of the counties listed are available in every database.

    This variable can be imported into the dictionary for the SEER limited-use database "Incidence - SEER 17 Regs Limited-Use, November 2006 Sub (2000-2004)" (single age database as well).
