Example of Conditioned Choropleth Maps

A single map was decomposed into strata according to whether percentage of households below the poverty level and percentage of current smokers are below, between, or above certain cut-points. The result is a three-by-three grid of nine US maps showing lung cancer mortality rates for white males, ages 65 - 74, in each segment of the population.

1. Percent Households below Poverty Level is high, Percent Current Smokers is low
2. Percent Households below Poverty Level is high, Percent Current Smokers is medium
3. Percent Households below Poverty Level is high, Percent Current Smokers is high
4. Percent Households below Poverty Level is medium, Percent Current Smokers is low
5. Percent Households below Poverty Level is medium, Percent Current Smokers is medium
6. Percent Households below Poverty Level is medium, Percent Current Smokers is high
7. Percent Households below Poverty Level is low, Percent Current Smokers is low
8. Percent Households below Poverty Level is low, Percent Current Smokers is medium
